Stars Fly to Dovecote

Even Martha needs decorating inspiration – and this Connecticut store, with everything from soaps to sofas, is just the place to get it!

Celebrity Living, August 2005 -
There's nothing like house arrest to get your designer juices flowing. Confined to her 153-acre
$15 million home in Bedford, N.Y., Martha Stewart just couldn't help giving the place a
facelift. Fortunately, the doyenne of domesticity was able to find everything she needed at Dovecote,
the Westport, Conn., boutique she has been known to frequent. Owner Sarah Kaplan, 34, opened this
2,500-square-foot high-end housewares store in 2002 to offer a little bit of everything to
decorating-minded folks with haute homes.

"I wanted a store where you could find everything to
decorate in one place," Kaplan tells CL. Her one-stop-shopping boutique, 50 miles from New
York City, is filled with books, flowers, antiques and candles — and has attracted other
celebrity clients, as well as country singer Faith Hill, model Helena Christensen,
Harry Connick Jr. and wife Jill Goodacre.

"We go out of our way for our celeb clients," Kaplan admits. "We make appointments for them to come
in when the store is closed. We arrange special flowers for them before the appointment or select
some things they might like." Kaplan's star clients even trust her enough to select holiday presents
for everyone on their gift lists. "Our bedding sets are particularly popular with celebrities. And our
antiques," she adds. All that and the Martha seal of approval. by SHARI GOLDHAGEN
